The libraries in Delaware and Sussex County are funded in various ways. Some libraries are fully county funded, others, such as the Lewes Public Library, are independent non-profit organizations, managed by their own volunteer Board of Commissioners. The Lewes Public Library receives funding from Sussex County and the State of Delaware. Other multiple in kind services and utilities are received from the City of Lewes.  The remaining must be raised through gifts, grants, donations and fundraising.

Support for books, media and programming for each fiscal year is provided by the annual membership of the Friends of the Lewes Public Library, an affiliate organization of the library which serves to provide approximately 10% of additional current operating expenses. Their membership drive is held in June of each year.

The Annual Appeal is an endeavor of the Library Board of Trustees and the Endowment Committee to help provide operating expenses as well as build endowment for the future growth and needs of the library.  Donors may choose to give support for either operating expenses or Endowment, or portion their gift to both areas of support.

The Trustees and staff of the Lewes Public Library are very grateful to the community for the demonstration of support.  For more information about the library, our Annual Appeal or our services, please contact a Trustee or the Library Director at 645-4633 or send e-mail through our website www.leweslibrary.org

A Gift That Lasts Forever

A gift to the library may be in cash, appreciated assests, or deferred as a bequest in a will. Donations of any size are welcome. Contributions to the fund will be invested to earn income each year; as the principal grows, so will the income to the Lewes Public Library. Therefore, each gift lasts forever since the principal continues to grow. For further information, please contact Chrys Dudbridge , the Library Director.

A permanent endowment for the library has been established by the Trustees for the purpose of supplementing normal operating funds to help cover ongoing costs of materials, programs and staff. An Advisory Committee was appointed to promote the fund.
