The next time you visit the library, take a few minutes to explore the Delaware Collection Room located near the far end of the circulation desk. This room houses the library's local history collection with reference materials on Delmarva, emphasizing Delaware and Lewes. The collection includes many signed and out-of-print books and is protected by a state of the art security system. A computer with Internet access is located in the room. Any library patron may use the collection but must first sign in with the staff. Donations from both David G. Burton, in memory of his mother Maradel G. Burton, and from the private collections of Mary Lou Poncell have made significant enhancements to the collection in recent years. The gorgeous woodwork of Delaware cherry is the handiwork of Ron Hill and is based on John Lester's design. Note the ingenious drawers and racks for maps and charts and other oversized items. Mr. & Mrs. Richard Scott and J. Conn Scott, Inc. of Selbyville donated the furniture which blends beautifully with the woodwork and includes a research table with chairs and several book and display cases. The rug dramatically displays the Seal of the State of Delaware. The State Department of Archives provided a computer disc with an exact representation of the seal so an accurate image could be woven into the rug. |
